MOBILE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Mobile access for colleagues on the move

Extended the existing platform with mobile access for quick performance checks and operational queries.

Opportunity and appraisal

Colleagues needed a convenient way to check performance and manage queries away from a store workstation. An early app concept developed with Technology reached the 2018 BT Challenge Cup finals.

I explored options through workshops with technology partners, seeking a practical approach that could reuse existing capability. We selected a configurable Oracle APEX mobile web application with its own URL and existing platform permissions. It could be saved to personal phones or tablets without relying on company-issued devices.

Design and delivery

I designed responsive screens around typical mobile sizes and a three-click principle for reaching key functions. Users could check sales, commercial value and KPIs. Desktop access continued to support deeper analysis and the wider platform functions.

The Query Management Tool was also integrated, allowing colleagues to raise cases, attach photographs of store issues and read responses from their phones. The application used a separate set of tables populated from the platform’s updated data.

Monitoring use

Access records distinguished mobile-origin activity from internal-system access and showed which reports colleagues used. I provided daily reporting to regional managers and updates to channel leadership to support conversations about take-up.

Outcome

Mobile-origin unique accesses increased by 50% over six weeks. This showed growth in use of the additional access route; it was not a claim of a 50% increase in all platform users.

The application combined quick performance checks with operational query handling and photographic evidence, using established permissions. It complemented the desktop platform.
